Environmental Commitment

Our Pledge to Protect Antarctic Krill, and the Wildlife That Depends on Them

We do not use Antarctic krill. We will never use Antarctic krill.

At Haka Life Nutrition, we believe the best products should support people without taking more from nature than nature can give back.

That is why we are proud to stand with Sea Shepherd Global as a signatory of the Antarctic Krill Pledge — a commitment to keep Antarctic krill out of our products, now and forever.

Krill may be tiny, but their role in the Antarctic ecosystem is enormous. Sea Shepherd describes krill as the foundation of Antarctic life, feeding whales, penguins, seals, seabirds, fish, and the wider Southern Ocean food web.

Why it matters

The Tiny Creatures That Hold an Ocean Together

Whales

Blue whales eat up to 4 tonnes of krill every single day during feeding season.

Penguins

Antarctic penguins depend on krill as their primary food source throughout the year.

Food Web

Krill form the keystone of the entire Southern Ocean food chain — remove them, and the ecosystem collapses.

Sea Shepherd

In 2023, Sea Shepherd documented krill supertrawlers operating alongside more than 200 whales.

"The Antarctic Krill Pledge asks companies to reduce pressure on this essential species by phasing out krill-derived products, refusing to introduce them in the future, and being transparent about that commitment."

No Antarctic krill.

Ever.

Our sourcing

A Better Way to Source Omega-3

Instead of krill, our flagship ingredient is New Zealand green-lipped mussel oil — a fundamentally different kind of marine source with a far lighter footprint.

1

Aquaculture rope farming in New Zealand

Our mussels are grown through rope farming in the pristine coastal waters of New Zealand, where they filter nutrients naturally from the water column and require absolutely no feed inputs.

2

Among the lowest-carbon animal proteins on earth

Independent life cycle research commissioned by Aquaculture New Zealand and New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries found that farmed Greenshell mussels have a carbon footprint comparable to tofu.

3

Supercritical CO₂ extraction — no harsh solvents

We use a clean supercritical COâ‚‚ extraction process to capture the natural oil from the mussels. This food-grade, non-toxic method helps concentrate the beneficial marine lipids without relying on chemical solvents.

Proud Signatory of the Antarctic Krill Pledge

Sea Shepherd Global's work in Antarctica has brought global attention to the growing pressure industrial krill fishing places on whales and other wildlife. We are grateful for their leadership and proud to support their call for companies to make better sourcing decisions.
