Knee pain

I've been taking 4 gel capsules a day but have not noticed knees feeling any better. Would like to know if I should double the amount I'm taking?

HI Gail - sorry to hear that but don't give up :) Yes - if you have severe pain you can try to double up the dose. We usually suggest taking 2 capsules in the AM and 2 capsules in the PM for the first 2-3 weeks...then 90% of our clients are able to go back to the one dose per day. Let us know if this helps! If it doesn't, of course we will honor our money-back guarantee :)

Interesting New Study Shows How Omega-3s May Help Fight Depression

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Research says that in countries where the average consumption of fish is higher, rates of depression are lower. This is great news — even if you aren’t living near the ocean. Because of the rise of supplements such as GLX3, you can have the benefits delivered right to your doorstep.

And, the Omega-3 fatty acids present in these supplements may effectively help you fight depression without the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs. Here’s the lowdown.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Depression

Significantly low levels of omega-3s have been reported in the red blood cell membranes of patients with anxiety and depression. Consuming ample omega-3 fatty acids may provide powerful protection against anxiety and depression. A Norwegian study has reported that people who take a regular intake of cod liver oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, were about thirty percent less likely to show symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who didn’t.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish are also known to improve mood, especially in case of people who are already suffering from depression. Furthermore, other research studies suggest that individuals who are under depression, despite taking antidepressant medications end up experiencing reduced intensity of sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances, when supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids (Edwards et al, 1998).

How Omega-3s Fight Depression

It appears that inadequate DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) has far-reaching hormonal impacts, elevating corticotropin-releasing hormone (a hormone that triggers moderation of emotionality). This eventually results in hyperactivity within the HPA (Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal axis. HPA is an important neuroendocrine system responsible for regulating aggression, mood and “fight-or-flight” responses which are associated with depression and anxiety. Omega-3 fatty intake enhances several aspects of brain function, including the control of mood and aspects of personality.

Research also suggests that boosting omega-3 fatty acid intake minimizes aggression and increases attention, probably by enhancing cognitive processes. Deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in major depressive disorders reflects the association between a diet that lacks the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and a genetically identified abnormality in their metabolism, in a way that cellular consumption of omega-3 PUFAs is reduced. Lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids could, therefore, be a risk factor for anxiety and depression, whereas dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids are considered to be an effective part of a well-tolerated and useful treatment for major depression problems.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids needed for proper development, growth, and function of brain tissues. They aren’t the unhealthy fats found in fryer oil and greasy foods — quite the opposite, actually. The human brain is sixty percent fat, and omega-3 fatty acids are the fatty acids of choice for the structural development of brain intercellular nerve connections and certain parts of brain cell membranes.  Lack of available omega-3s impacts brain function and is associated with cognitive, depressive and emotional disorders.

Cognitive Benefits of Omega-3s

  • Adding omega-3 into our diets is associated with improved outcomes for several mental health disorders, for example, impaired cognition and even Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids has been implicated in cognitive impairment, whereas diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids are found to benefit cognitive function.
  • Dietary supplementation with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) protects against the type of brain damage associated with Alzheimer’s disease.  A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids is found to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and in some cases can also offer modest benefit in patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease.

Bottom line

Fish and mussel oil is not going to be your sole treatment of replacement for treating depression. But it can definitely serve as an additional remedy to prescribed medicines or other sort of treatment, and when combined with a healthy diet and exercise, can help to yield significant results.

Essential for healthy brain function and structure, omega-3 fatty acids are quite significant for a healthy mood and maintaining a distance with mental anxiety. These powerful fatty acids (EPA) and (DHA) are essential throughout life—ensuring healthy brain growth in babies, maintaining a uplifted mood in adulthood, and safeguarding the aging brain against dementia and cognitive decline. Optimizing your consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is not only important and significant for a healthy body, but also for a healthy mind. There is also significant evidence that supports that omega-3 fatty acids can be utilized in the treatment of bipolar depression and schizophrenia.
